The Union and the Confederacy were reluctant to arm black soldiers, and it was only after two years into the war that black men were legally allowed to enlist. Military commanders on both sides of the conflict viewed black men as a liability, and were uncertain whether black troops would shoot at their white comrades, the enemy, or simply run away.

This photograph shows Company E, Fourth US Colored Infantry at Fort Lincoln in 1865. Many black people fought during the Civil War, although their participation has historically been overlooked.
